Mr. Porter Says Beat of “When the Gun Draws” was Originally for Dr. Dre’s “DETOX”

“When the Gun Draws” is a song by Pharoahe Monch, featuring  and produced by Mr. Porter aka Denaun, released on June 26, 2007. In a song Monch raps from the perspective of a bullet, touching on social issues by that time, conspiracies and the assassinations of political figures.

In the recent Instagram post, Mr. Porter says: “In honor of my good friends birthday this beat was created for the original version of Dr. Dre’s Detox, and not like ‘oh I made some beats and gave them to Dre,’ I mean like in the other room while he was in another and trying to find a sound, any who Pharoahe Monch had this idea of writing a song from a bullets perspective, I thought it was brilliant and was already such a fan of his writing style, so I knew I had the perfect backdrop to this story. We worked on a lot of Desire at my Area 51 studio in Detroit, it was my first taste of executive production. I always say I have only worked with the absolute best lyricist in my career. He is the one! I love being able to give vision to the ears of the listener. This is why I am such a fan of Hans Zimmer and Terrance Blanchard. This song is a movie in your ears. Enjoy.”
